Person of the
Week
Faraz Khalid
Faraz Khalid, a Fulbright Scholar at Tulane University, was
instrumental in the opening of The Interfaith Prayer Room.
When Khalid first arrived at Tulane, he couldn’t find a
suitable place to pray. He prayed in his room and, hesitantly, in his
office. Khalid decided to write to the School’s Office of Student Services
to ask about a prayer room. Soon, a student lounge became available for
prayer a few hours each day. As word spread about this new lounge, more and
more international students began using it. Although the lounge was a great
start, it didn’t fully serve their needs, so Khalid and other students and
faculty met again to discuss a full-time prayer room. Thanks to Khalid and
the other students and staff who worked on this project, Tulane now has a
full-time prayer room in Tidewater Room 1506. Kudos to you!

Downtown hours are an opportunity for international
students, scholars, and staff at Tulane’s downtown campus to meet with an
OISS advisor, ask questions, and request services. If you are a new
international student at the downtown campus, you can also complete your
required check-in process during downtown hours.

Patricia de Santana Pinho is Associate
Professor in the Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and US Latino
Studies at SUNY-Albany. She is the author of Mama
Africa: Reinventing Blackness in Bahia (Duke University Press, 2010), an
expanded edition of Reinvenções da África na Bahia, which received an
Honorary Award from LASA’s Premio Iberoamericano
for the outstanding book on Latin America in the social sciences and the

Take
Back the Night: March Against Sexual Violence

Tulane University is joining the international wave of
peaceful protests to end rape and other forms of sexual violence by
participating in Take Back The Night on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. Tulane
joins Loyola and Dillard in planning this event. The ceremony will begin on
the Marquette lawn on Loyola’s main campus. After a candlelight vigil, more
than 600 participants are expected to march down St. Charles Avenue and end
at Tulane’s campus where survivors will share their stories. All funds
raised from raffle tickets and donations are distributed equally to benefit
three local service groups dedicated to serving victims and survivors of
gender-based violence, including the New Orleans Family Justice Center,
Metropolitan Center for Women and Children and the Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiner program. Last year, the fundraising effort raised more than

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
celebrates the popular Mexican holiday of remembrance with festive and

Musicians. The concert will formally begin at 2:30 p.m. and will include
music by Beethoven, Stookey, and Galindo.
