  • If you are travelling for Thanksgiving please make sure that you have a valid I-20/DS-2019, and that the travel signature is up to date.

  • If you are graduating in December, now is the time to inform us if you have changed your major or if you are planning on extending your status/studies.

Career Workshop with OGPS: Career Considerations for International Students 

  • When: Wednesday, November 2nd from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M.

The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (OGPS), together with staff members from the OISS, are going to be presenting this employment workshop.  OGPS is also going to be having additional workshops happening at later dates, you can view the calendar in the section below.

FAN-FAVORITE PHOTO CONTEST WINNER

 

OSA and OISS are excited to announce the Fan Favorite in the IEW Photo Contest! Thanks to everyone who voted on Facebook and Instagram! The Fans have spoken and the winner, announced at the FAQ on Friday, is Nithya Kasireddy, PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering. She submitted this photo, titled "Global Connections," which was the theme of this year's contest. Dialogues on Difference 2016

The Community Engagement Advocates are offering a series of free workshops open to the Tulane community about issues of power, privilege and identity. This Fall, the monthly workshop topics will be “Race + Racism”, “Classism + Inequality”, and “Gender + Sexuality”. These 90 minute sessions are designed to create space for members of the Tulane community to learn, share and explore these topics together through dialogue and interactive activities. 

Space is limited to 25 participants per session and participants are strongly encouraged to RSVP on Orgsync to ensure a spot. For more information, contact Melanie Johnson at mjohns32@tulane.edu or Ben Brubaker at bbrubake@tulane.edu.  

 

PLEN Applications

Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) seminars provide college students the valuable opportunity to explore their career interests through meetings with industry leaders, interactive workshops, and site visits in Washington, DC. Applications for 4 PLEN sessions are open now through Oct. 31 and can be found here. To learn more, attend our information session or e-mail Betsy at elopez@tulane.edu.

CELT + OGPS - Bag Lunch Series - "Innovations in Graduate Education"

The Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching and the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are pleased to present this series to be hosted by Brian S. Mitchell, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.  It is intended to engage faculty, Directors of Graduate Studies, and graduate students/postdocs interested in faculty careers in a dialogue on current theories and developments in graduate education. All meetings will be held from 12 to 1 pm. Drinks and cookies will be provided, but attendees should bring their own lunch if they wish. 

Wednesday, 11/16, in Stibbs Conference Room, LBC, and will cover Career Success (Rubio, Acad Med, 86, 1571, 2011)

 

CAPS - Dissertation Progress Groups

The Dissertation Progress Groups will help students explore how they might overcome personal barriers while engaging with their project. They will be discussing common dilemmas facing graduate students trying to move forward with their work, and assist in identifying strategies for taking the edge off the strain.

TUCP Presents: Vanessa Bayer!

Wednesday, October 26 from 8:00-9:30pm

Come out to McAlister Auditorium (Bldg. 43) to see SNL's Vanessa Bayer perform stand up comedy!  Vanessa returned to SNL for her seventh season and recently starred in the box office hit "Trainwreck" alongside Amy Schumer. Bayer will next be seen in Susan Johnson's independent feature, "Carrie Pilby," as well as in the Dreamworks feature "Office Christmas Party."

 

Social Innovation Conversations - Design Thinking in Global Development 

  • When: Friday, October 28th from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M.

Maille Faughnan, a Tulane doctoral candidate in the Payson program in global development, will present her experiences and insights from conducting recent field research in rural Kenya on the uptake of human-centered design mindsets and methods for an international development organization. 

 

International Mom's Club Fall Pumpkin Farm Trip

Saturday, October 29 from 3:00-8:30pm

Join other international moms (+kids and dads are welcome!) for a trip to Amite, LA and Liuzza Farms.  The farm hosts a fun and educational event for children to celebrate fall including a pumpkin patch, pony rides, tunnel slide, feeding goats, learning about 19th century farming and more!  CLICK HERE TO RSVP!

Coffee with a Cop

October 26th from 5-8 PM in PJ's on Willow St. 

The Tulane University Police Department (TUPD) and PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans (PJ’s) are excited to host the first Coffee With a Cop: an opportunity for community members to come together with the TUPD in an informal space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink free coffee. Changemaker Institute

Have an idea for social change? Applications are now open to the Changemaker Institute (CI), a free social venture accelerator for undergraduate and graduate students hosted by Tulane’s Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking.The program features:

  • An eight-week workshop series with expert social entrepreneurs
  • Individualized Mentors in the changemaking ecosystem in New Orleans
  • Up to $20,000 in funding opportunities and staff support
  • A strong cohort with like-minded students across campus

Presentation: Berta Caceres' Daughter - Human Rights Activist

Thursday, October 27 at 6:30pm, Room 102 in Jones Hall (#25)

Attend a presentation by the daughter of Berta Cáceres, a human rights activist that helped to transform many aspects of the social and political atmosphere in Honduras. Come out and hear first hand from her daughter, Olivia Zúñiga Cáceres. Talk will be in Spanish with English interpretation provided.

Sponsored by Tulane University’s Stone Center for Latin American Studies, Newcomb College Institute, the Environmental Studies Program, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Amigos de Nuestra América.

 

Tulane Alternative Breaks (TAB): Roots of Renewal and City Park 

Roots of Renewal is asking for volunteers for a two-day project on November 5th (10AM-5PM) and the 6th (1-5PM). This two-day commitment includes orientation, so no experience is necessary! The participants will survey around Central City, interacting with citizens and collecting data to analyze the poverty in the community.

They will be doing service at City Park on November 19th from 8:45AM to 12:15PM. With other volunteers from all over the city, participants will be involved in forest improvement including tree plantation and clearing the trail.  Sign up at this link: https://orgsync.com/85533/chapter

DOWNTOWN HOURS + ITO + LUNCHES

Location: Tidewater Building Room 2460, Time: Tuesdays, 1:00-4:00 pm

Downtown hours are an opportunity for international students, scholars, and staff at Tulane's downtown campus to meet with an OISS advisor, ask questions, and request services. If you are a new int'l student at the downtown campus, you can also complete your required check-in process during these hours.

Starting on September 20th WFMO’s international tax office is going to have a representative available every other Tuesday. This is a resource for international students and scholars to get assistance with U.S. taxes and get answers to tax-related questions.

We will also have scheduled lunches at Tidewater Room 1210, from 12:00 - 1:00 P.MThey will take place on October 25th and November 15th. This will be a time for students, faculty, and staff to relax and take a break from studying.

2016 Azúcar Ball

  • When: Saturday, November 19th
  • Where: Hyatt Regency, 601 Loyola Ave.

This will be a festive night of music, dancing, great food and entertainment. The prestigious Gálvez Cup will also be awarded to an outstanding member of our community as part of the program, which also will include an exciting silent auction. The black-tie event will be coordinated by the NOHHF’s 2016 Azúcar Ball Committee, chaired by Heidi Kiesling and Aimee Bonomolo. 

The 2016 Azúcar Ball Online Silent Auction will be open for bidding on November 4, 2016.
