OISS/CGE News and EventsGlobal Cafe Uptown

OPT/STEM Workshops
The OISS is kicking off OPT Season with informational workshops and new drop off times. Learn how the OPT process works for F-1 students. In order to be eligible for OPT you must have held a valid non-immigrant status for at least one academic year. OPT allows you to work in your field of study for up to 12 months (36 months for certain STEM fields). If you are graduating in May, we highly suggest that you attend this session. OISS Night with the Pelicans
OISS is taking a group to the New Orleans Arena on Monday, February 26th to watch the New Orleans Pelicans play the Phoenix Suns at 7:00 pm. You will have the opportunity to watch a great game. All who attend that come with this group will also have an opportunity for a post-game photo on the Pelicans court, and will also get a T-shirt! 
Pizza and Prep 2:Classroom Participation & Culture
Join OISS staff and members of the Academic Learning and Tutoring Center for an info session about classroom participation and culture. This is a great opportunity to learn how to get the most out of your classes here at Tulane and also learn about US classroom culture and resources to support you as a student. We will also enjoy some pizza during this informal presentation. International Spouses and Partners English Conversation Program
The International Spouses and Partners English Conversation Program was created to provide non-credit English instruction to the spouses and partners of Tulane international students, scholars, post-doctoral researchers, faculty and staff. The courses meet on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00 during the fall and spring semesters. The courses focus on improving students’ English speaking and conversation skills, vocabulary, and understanding of American culture.

Looking to get outdoors, be active, and make friends? Join any of Tulane's intramural sports teams, including flag football, outdoor soccer, and dodgeball! If smaller competitions are more your thing, join the singles or doubles matches! Please note the deadlines. 
Career Fair Workshops
Prepare yourself with the essentials of how to work a career fair: know what to wear, how to get there, and who to talk to at the Spring Career Expo on Friday 2/2/18 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Celebrities (Jennifer Lawrence, Adam McKay, others) will join leaders from the left and the right to discuss how to repair American politics, here at Tulane University. The Saturday night celebration will take place from 8:00 - 10:30 PM at McAlister Auditorium and will feature guest speakers, live music, and comedy. 
Mardi Gras Mile
Put on your best Mardi Gras costume and join TU Rec for a 1-mile fun run through campus! Registration will take place on the LBC Quad the week leading up to the race. Project IX: Tackling Sexual Violence on Campus
Project IX is a student-centered design project to tackle sexual
violence on campus. We had our first session, an open-call to students, on November 1st where we started to more deeply understand your needs, desires, fears, and frustrations. We began to envision what a campus free of sexual violence, harassment, and sexism could look like. HAPPENING IN NEW ORLEANS
Mardi Gras Parade Schedule Carnival season officially begins on January 6 every year and continues through Fat Tuesday, which falls on the day before Ash Wednesday. This year’s parades will take place between January 6th and February 13th, 2018. Additionally this weekend the parades of 'tit Rex, Chewbacchus (see below), and also Barkus (Sunday) will be rolling, don't miss them! Parade of the Week: Chewbacchus!
This Sci-Fi themed Mardi Gras parade consists of over 150 distinct subkrewes, each of which pays loving (and sometimes satirical) homage to the full spectrum of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and everything in between. They make all of their own throws and even developed a method for casting their own custom bead medallions. Chewbacchus is a model of creative collaboration and has grown into a self-sustaining tradition. 
The Blue Library 3
Check out the third iteration of the Blue Library, a photographic answer to the first US travel ban. The project's intention is to show the similarities of daily life in these affected countries alongside the lives of average American, while also embracing the unique cultural differences. Participating artists are from the US, Somalia, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, and Yemen. Prospect 4 International Art Exhibition
Prospect presents the work of diverse local, national, and international artists in unique and culturally exceptional venues, creating an optimistic cartography through the education and engagement of residents and visitors. Check out the 4th iteration: The Lotus In Spite of The Swamp, which celebrates New Orleans' unique cultural landscape as a creative force! 
Volunteer/Other OpportunitiesShuttles & Transportation is Hiring! Tulane's Shuttles & Transportation is currently hiring student employees, for both driving/office jobs. These jobs are eligible to international students (they do not require work-study). If you are interested in driving you would need to have a valid U.S. driver's license. Foreign Language Speaker Needed! If you speak a language that is not on the following list, you are eligible to be a speaker for ANTH 6420, Linguistic Field Methods. We are looking for someone to spend time with our class and share your language once a week starting in March. There will be a stipend given at the end of the semester. Tulane University's Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics is conducting a research project on osteoporosis. If you are eligible to participate, you would receive at no cost a Bone Health Assessment, which includes a bone density test. Compensation for your time and travel is provided for the one-time, 2-hour visit. We will also validate your parking if needed.
